What's your ride?

I'm getting to the stage where I need Some wheels to get me from a to b when I'm out and about. So I was wondering about what you use, scooter, powerchair or whatever else? What made you choose the wheels you have?

My is a powerchair, small and compact and very old but it still works ok.

- Electric wheelchair.

- Manual wheelchair [for when lecci one in on charge or if I have to go into hospital]

- Monster scooter for taking hound for gallops.

- Baby foldable scooter for putting in the boot of a taxi when I go shopping.

wish I could fit in a small scooter being 6ft six tall and over the weight limit of many scooters doesnt help at all.

heres My chariot complete with trailer for when i go shopping or fishing. it's a Freerider Westminister. built in Corby Northamptonshire about five years ago before the factory finally closed down spares are still available but getting scarce now, its a brilliant scooter and nippy to, even with a loaded trailer on the back. the trailer goes on the back of the car if I want to go fishing and the scooter goes in the back of the car, when I get to where I am going the trailer comes off the car and connects to the scooter.


should have seen the look on the security guards face when I tried driving into tescos with the trailer on the back........:lol: :lol: :lol:

The trouble is the scooter (freerider Westminister) doesnt fold up like small scooters so it has to be driven up ramps into my estate car it doesnt have enough range to get me out of the rural area I live in and back again, even if it is a top of the line scooter.
I bought it second hand and it cost me 3000 to buy.
with new batteries.
it is a very heavy scooter 175Kgs. the trailer is your standard Halfords trailer bought in kit form, I had a towbar welded to the back of the scooter, there is also a amber flashing light on a pole for the scooter if I need to use it on A roads which is a legal requirement

the flashy light is handy in shopping centres because people dont look where they are going and they definately see you comming with a flashy light.

the scooter is so quick when I first got it I parked it facing the doctors surgery glass porch and drove forward instead of backwards and drove right through an eight foot plate glass window into the porch.

it is important to have insurance these days.:blush:

Hers a tip for anyone who runs their scooter batteries down to much and the charger wont work when it is plugged in.
Most chargers for scooters require a signal voltage from the batteries of at least 5 volts before the supplied automatic charger will work properly, leave your scooter lights on for a day and the battery goes flat and the charger refuses to work when you plug it into the scooter.

simply raise the charge of the scooter batteries by connecting a car battery charger to each battery for a couple of hours then plug in the automatic charger which will sense a back voltage and continue to charge the scooters batteries. well worth noting because it always happens when you want to use the scooter, it is very embarrassing having to call out a recovery service to recover your scooter and return it to the dealership for a simple battery charge with a car charger.

Bill, it all depends what you want and how easy you want life to be I find it more and more difficult to load the big scooter onto the car these days as I have accuired a hernia which is inoperable due to my medication which they wont stop to do the operation to dangerous they say. driving a big scooter up two foldable alloy ramps into the back of an estate car takes some practice, fortunately the scooter has an automatic brake which allows you to stop the scooter on the ramps speaking of which are very expensive pieces of kit. two fold up ramps cost me £169 on top of the price for the scooter (nasty).

It is all to easy to get ripped off when buying a new scooter, many of them are now being imported from China in job lots and the dealers are only paying around £80 each for the scooters then they sell them on in Blighty for thousands, what a rip off.

I have always wanted to set up a bussiness selling scooters and wheelchairs with no more than 10% profit but the bussines would have to be really big, like warehouse big. some of these massive all singing all dancing scooters are marked up at 1000% profit in the UK. very naughty and in my view takes advantage of the very people society should be protecting from such behaviour.

Bill the answer is shop around talk to the sales people try to work out if they are full of themselves or genuine caring people that will address your needs and requirements but not rip you off in the process.
