Why was Christmas banned in Scotland for 400yrs.?

Youve got me there...Apart from the fact that New Years Day has always been more inportant....If I had to guess it would have something to do with the Highland Clearances by the English xxxx :ohmy:

It was banned in the 1580's in the time of John Knox,because it was believed to be papist in origin.It did not become a pulic holiday in Scotland until 1958.The ban was strictly enforced by law.
