There isn’t one flower used for every Hawaiian lei. The choice often depends on the occasion, meaning, season, and available materials.
  • Popular Flowers- Plumeria, orchids, and pikake are commonly used.
  • Special Occasions- Maile is often chosen for weddings and ceremonies.
  • Cultural Meaning- Lei can express love, honor, celebration, welcome, or farewell.
There isn’t one specific flower used for every Hawaiian lei. Different Hawaiian flowers are chosen based on the occasion, fragrance, color, season, and cultural meaning. Plumeria and orchids are popular for celebrations, while pikake is often used for weddings and special events because of its sweet scent.

Maile, a fragrant leafy vine rather than a flower, is also commonly used for graduations, weddings, ceremonies, and other meaningful occasions.

The significance of a lei depends on more than the flowers used. The giver, the recipient, and the reason for giving it all add meaning. Hawaiian flowers in leis can represent love, respect, friendship, welcome, celebration, or remembrance, which is why different flowers and plants are selected for different moments.
