FREMONT (CBS SF) — A bag holding $20,000 in cash was snatched from a woman eating lunch at a Fremont restaurant earlier this week, police said.
Around 1:45 p.m. Monday, a 65-year-old mentally handicapped woman was eating at the Hong Kong Buffet at 41063 Fremont Blvd. when a man sat at a nearby table, ordered food and a beer and then 10 minutes later got up to pay for his meal, police said.
As he got up he grabbed the woman’s brown leather backpack from the chair beside her. In a struggle over the bag the victim was knocked to the floor and the suspect was able to run out of the eatery, police said.
He fled in a black BMW that was parked on the west side of the nearby Billar Los Dos Amigos Bar, police said.
The victim’s bag contained all of her life possessions, which included the cash.
The bag was later found near the Alameda Creek in the Niles District of Fremont with all the contents except for the money still inside, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Fremont police Officer L. Snyder at (510) 402-8810.
