Hey,

I suffer from mid carpal instabililty too.

I have had it for about 4 years now i had an operation which didnt work.

I have it in both of my wrists so find daily chores difficult sometimes.

The surgeon who did my operation told me it wouldn't get worse,

But I feel like it is getting worse. I found it hard to pull a christmas cracker today!

I just want to know what I should do?! will it get worse with time?

My left wrist is worse than my right and the bones in My left wrist move around quite freely.

I would just like to know what i should do!

Please help!

Thanks

Hi Adie....

My mother had a Mid Carpal operation about 6 years ago when she was in her 70s..

It has been a complete success and with little to no reaction.

She was told that the physio after-care was really important in improving recovery.

Hi Adie :)

Mid Carpal Instability (MCI) can be very complex for the consultant orthopeadic & trauma & hand upper-limb surgeon/s,

Some debate its not a disability, condition, &/Or a problem, & They say MCI is in Your head or a party-trick, or You've got hyper mobility syndrome, & These Consultants are often lazy & lack knowlodge, & State X-Rays & MRI-Scans reveal no instability patterns or arthritis, & They therefore see no problems, But most Wrist Instability Patterns at the being is Dynamic & Therefore will never show up on Stand Plan X-Rays, MRI-Scans, It can take serval weeks, months, & Even sometimes many years for Static Wrist Instability Patterns to show up on plan X-rays & MRI-Scans,

When Wrist Instability is in the early diagnoise, You Consultant has to relie on Special Test X-Rays & MRI-Scans, But mainly The Consultant has to relie on \"PHYSICAL TESTS & EXAMINATIONS OF THE FINGERS, HAND, WRIST, ARM, ELBOW, SHOULDER, NECK\" \"AND TAKING A DETAILED HISTORY\".

Each Wrist Instability Pattern will be dealt differently by each Consultant, An Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, Will always try to be honest with there patients & explain that MCI is Complex & Serious, & Will in its self bring rise to complactions,

That might include the mci being ignored for years, referred from Doctors, Consultants, Hospitals, Physiotherapists, & Being let done, etc.

But once Your in the hands of a Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, Will always try to be honest with there patients & explain that MCI is Complex & Serious, & They will often advise twice a day physiotherapy finger, hand, wrist, arm, strenthening exercises, followed by 6 - 8 weeks in a wrist splint/brace, hot & cold therapy for pain & swelling, Painkillers & NSAIDs, Then followed by Special Stress X-rays, The best MRI-Scanners, Physical Examinaton of both sets of fingers, hands, wrists, arms, elbows, shoulders, both sides of the neck, (This is to rule out hpyer mobility snydrome),

Once all these tests have been studied & If after 6 - 8 weeks in a wrist splint/wrist brace, twice a day physiotherapy finger, hand, wrist, arm, strenthening exercises, Painkillers & NSAIDs,, hot & cold therapy, Has not helped with the Wrist Instability Pain, Discomfort, Clicking, snapping, clunking, popping,

Then The Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, Will discuss optitions, So of which will be try to live with the mci for life without any operations, Or discuss many operations,

They often will not ccarry out a limited or full wwrist fusion on young people, Sometimes not on people in there 70's,

So young people are often left with living with the mci for live without wrist spints/wrist braces, hot & cold therapy for pain & swelling, Painkillers & NSAIDs, & Then carrying on with twice a day physiotherapy finger, hand, wrist, arm, strenthening exercises, for life,

Or live with the mci & Carry on with all the above for live & Without Any Wrist Stablizing Operations, & Carry on with wrist spints/wrist braces, hot & cold therapy for pain & swelling, Painkillers & NSAIDs, & Then carrying on with twice a day physiotherapy finger, hand, wrist, arm, strenthening exercises, for life, (You'll Always Be told Not To Over Use the Wrist That Has MCI, But At The Same Time To Also Never Stop Using The MCI Wrist Either),

Young often will only be given the following standard stabilizing mci operations:

* Wrist Arthroscopy *

* Ligament Tightening Operation & May Use K-Wires To Fix/Stablize A Few Unstable Carpal Bones For Few Weeks, While In Wrist Cast For 3 Months or So *

* Arthroscopic Thermal Capsulorrhaphy for Palmar Midcarpal Instability *

All those mci stablizing wrist operations do not carry any sort of Guarantee of ever working to stablize the carpal bones or being a life time fix for Pain & Discomfort, & After the go ahead You must continue with wrist spints/wrist braces, hot & cold therapy for pain & swelling, Painkillers & NSAIDs, & Then carrying on with twice a day physiotherapy finger, hand, wrist, arm, strenthening exercises, for life.

Most of those 3 standard wrist operations for mci can be hit & Miss, Depending on the level of the carpal instability patterns & Other complactions, Such as developing RSD/CRSP, Or other nevere damge, or carpal tunnel syndrome, & So on can all effect the outcome of such an mci stablizing wrist operation, & Were to go if the above treatments have failed, etc,

All though any of the above 3 opertions could last for years, They often will need a limited &/Or a full wrist fusion, Which most Suregons refuse to carry out on the young, Let alone the old,

Those who get a limited &/Or a full wrist fusion are often luck, But still have to carry out physiotherapy & May need splints, aids, & painkillers, But in the long furture & depending on your job/s & hobbies, the limited or full fusion could later out added pressure on the joints that are now supporting the wrist with the plate or someing the size of a fifty penece holding the carpal bones together, & Some develope RSD/CRSP, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Other nevere damage,

&

Then if You get other disabilities/conditons on top of Your already Pianful MCI, & Other outside factors, The Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, May no longer want to go ahead with a Your best opition/s of a successfuk out come & More use from Your wrist, & Decide its to risky to go ahead with an limited &/Or full wrist fusion to stablize the carpal bones & Even though its Your best shot, They won't go ahead with it, So Your stuck or left to Struggle on.

I Suggest Pain Managerment too.

Adie You might want to chat with Myself, Julie, & Ryan, @ www.ablehere.com/component/option,com_jo...iew/id,2097/catid,47 & www.ablehere.com/component/option,com_jo...ew/id,15798/catid,47

They might be able to discuss about there views/opinions on mci & How they've been treated, etc.

Hi Tony :)

May ask what type of MCI Stablizing Wrist Operation She went under?.

Was She under an Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, Or was She under another type of Consultant Surgeon &/Or An General Consultant Surgeon?.

How long was it before The MCI had been diagionsed, Before they operated?.

Was She at point told The MCI was in Her head, A Party-Trick, Been there all Her life & She'd never noticed it &/Or never caused Her Pian, Discomfort, Disability, Or Any point suggest She had hyper mobility snydrome?.

Was She treated first through 6 - 8 weeks in a wrist splint/wrist brace, with physiotherapy, painkillers, ect, While MRI-Scans & Stress X-Rays & Physical Examinations were taking place, Or did they \"JUMP STRAIGHT INTO SURGERY BECAUSE OF HER AGE & WRIST DISABILITY\"?.

Were they any signs of arthritis in the hand/wrist.

Was She told any MCI Stablizing Wrist Operation Doesn't Equal A Cure/Fix, But Might Help For 8 - 10 Years, Depending On The Type Of Wrist Operation Carried Out.

Sorry for type o' s & Spelling mistakes :(

You should always seek an Exprinced Consultant Orthopeadic & Trauma & Hand Upper-Limb Surgeon/s, & Some one to one Physiotherapy Sessions, hot & cold therapy, & Wrist Splint/Wrist Brace For 6 - 8 weeks, Followed by advice on weather to continue wearing the wrist splint/wrist brace.
