sorry to butt in but everytime I speak to one or another computer guru they all say they are sick of windows seven it starts out being a bit of a novelty because it does things in a different way then after a while it locks up your computer which becomes slower and slower and slower until it finally grinds to a halt.

these are people who build computers on a daily basis and load up 9 computers on a work bench at a time with operating systems, they are all going back eventually to windows Xp pro., make sure you get an office program if you go to windows seven and you might also need outlook express email something else not included with windows seven. if you are using web based email like hotmail never mind. I have a corporate windows XP disk which doesnt require a license key and can be put on as many computers as you wish, in fact any disc can be put on any amount of computers as long as a business doesnt do it and expect to get away with using just one license key, which is illegal. private users install one license on as many computers as they need and have no problems getting away with it as Microsoft dont collect any personal information on activation unless you volenteer to give it away. windows seven still has compatability issues with graphics cards, blue ray players and certain dvd writers at the moment, it is not the universal O/S that the adverts claim it is.
I can still access my files from a laptop if I go abroard with windows xp pro, this is nothing new in windows seven. dispalying multipul windows is nothing new either you can still do it in XP, treat yourself to a memory upgrade and speed up your computer with a minimum of four gig of ram and your windows xp will absolutely fly it will only see three gig of ram but it will use four if it is installled if you have a new motherboard it will probably have ddr2 ram modules they start at around 31 quid for a gig of memory, so depending on what you have already and the space left on your new motherboard for memory jack up the speed and marvel at the speed of your future computing experience's Tony if youyr changing lap tops try having a look at the Novatech website you can get a naked 4 gig memory dual core pentium laptop for around £425 this will come with all the driver discs but no operating system then buy yourself an operating system disk an xp disk these days costs around £70 this will enable you to format your own laptop system periodically keeping the hard disk in optimum condition and the discs that come with the laptop contain all of the drivers to run the laptop componants, something you will never get with a supermarket lap top, formatting hard disks is easy and you can get plenty of info online about it.

your welcome Tony,

the only thing with computers is the more you spend the better you get, I could never understand why companies like Dell & Toshiba dont want you to have driver discs with your new supermarket laptop, its nothing to do with licensing another drawback of buying from a supermarket is that all to often the most basic of operating systems is loaded onto a computer given a license key and when you switch is on it tells you that the operating system is only a trial version. sometimes the operating system can be damaged what are you supposed to do then if you dont have an operating system disk? take it to a shop that will charge you 60 punds to put their O/S disk in to the dvd drive and click repair?

another thing I'd like to mention is that I hardly ever download security updates for any of my three computers, there are two critical updates we all need if we are running windows xp service pack two but the rest of them are mainly for people who are not wise enough to install some third party internet security
they clog up your system, confuse the system on start up fragment your hard disk to an unbelieveable level and most are completely unecessary.

if you want a stable windows xp system run third party internet security and forget about the microsoft updates.

if you want to run a good maintenance program try downloading Advanced System Care free from cnet's download.com if and when the advert pops up to sell you the full version just click the x at the top right hand corner to close it,

remove the tick in the privacy box as this will delete your computers remembered websites and paswords, so they will take longer to load when you go back to them.

otherwise it is a fantastic little program for cleanning up your pc each time you use it and its free to, you'll be amased at the junk it takes out of your computer when you click on that big blue button in the centre of the five blue circles. w

my whole family runs this program now just before they shutdown their computers leaving it junk free and the hard disk is all back in order ready for next time they use their PC.

if you can imagine a hard disk putting files into alphabetical order, when you click on a desktop icon it searches for the program picks up the program and drags it to the start of the drive now your hard disk files are no longer in alphabetical order so next time you click that desk top icon it the hard disk pick up goes to where the program should be

alphabetically but its not there its back at the beginning of the drive now imagine this happenning several hundred times with lots of different programs or icons you hard disk just becomes a complete mess and will need defragging to put all the files back in order.

Avanced system care free does this by clicking one button. I was recently asked to look at someones computer he had never done any maintenance in the seven years he had owned the computer unbelieveable, it was a miricale the hard disk was still operating all be it very slowley.
by the way tyour hard disk isnt areanged alphabetically its all in binary code but that makes the above much harder to explain.

Nigel, I don't have a supermarket laptop - I don't even have a laptop computer, and my pc was not an \"off the shelf\" one either. None of them were. They were built specifically for my requirements, by someone who really really really does know what he is doing. And I trust him implicitly, because apart from anything else he is the son-in-law of very good friends of mine.

I am changing from XP Pro to the educational version of Windows 7 for one simple reason.

XP is going to be obsolete in the not too distant future. It had already been going for two years before I got my first computer and no amount of security updates will keep it going forever. Windows 7 has now been going also for about two years and all initial bugs have been sorted.

No doubt Windows 7 will be obsolete in another few years - currently Windows 9 is being worked on.

I really believe that you think you are an expert regarding computers, but thanks I prefer to stick with a person who I KNOW is an expert.

To be honest, having read your posts, I think you are talking a load of crap. Telling people not to download security updates is downright dangerous.

Gandra,

I didnt claim to be an expert to start with and if you want to download lots of security update downloads and clog up your hard disk then so be it your choice.

whoever built it wasnt very careful, motherboards are usually quality tested before leaving the factory it is very very unusual for them to have defective componants or in fact broken capacitors.

when was the last time you defragged your hard disk and did any basic maintenmance on your computer on a day to day basis not handing it to the so called proffessional who gives it a service once every year and charges you for it.

In fact if you had been servicing the computer you might not need to hand it to a friend to have it done at cost and consequently would have saved x-amount of pounds. I never take any of my computers to someone else to be serviced because I have learnt to build them myself except for my Novatech Laptop, if your happy to let someone else trawl through all of your pertsonal information on your hard disk be it bank transactions or
emails then thats your choice, a simple registry fix and defragment program as mentioned above will keep your cpomputer up to speed and prevent the need to have repairs done because your hard disk has given up through not being serviced at all, and what exactly is the point of downloading security updates if you are using third party security software? you seem to be knowledgeable enough to crap on my comments above yet you still have to take your computer to someone else to have it serviced.

round here it is £60.00 an hour to have work done on your computer it saves a lot of money learnning how to do it yourself, if you have a windows 7 disk you can do all the necessary maintenance yourself formatting a hard disk & reloading windows takes about 2 hours thats all and it is relatively easy to do if you can follow simple instructions on your screen. it is all to easy to shun good advice and take your computer to someone else to sort out any issue you have with it. how often do you back up your hard disk to an external drive? probably never.

obviously your well off and can afford to chuck your money down the drain, I can't,

good luck with windows 7 I hope it works for you when it slows down and grinds to a halt esspecially if your not doing any daily maintenance to your hard disk/s then perhaps you will start to understand.

Microsoft has been very slow to release updates for windows 7 and that has been a major complaint about the operating system program, there will still be more updates in the future for windows 7 as new software is released then compatability issues will arrise and yet another update will be released.

if your looking for a complete operating system program then xp pro 64 bit for 64 bit processors is probably the most complete O/s available because there are no more updates. they were stopped last year.

why you are so convinced that just because a download is marked security it is good for your computer is probably why you end up with your computer being useless and needing some attention, the uopdates are made to fix problems with software compatability issues etc, if your not running the software that relates to the downloads then whats the point in downloading the updates?

its like turnning off your windows firewall I suppose your one of those people who believes in running your windows firewall even if it conflicts with third part internet security software, a conflict will leave your computer even more vulnerable becuse two security programs are fighting each other something else that will grind your computer to a halt.

excuse me if I like to know exactly what is on my computers, you so willingly download files without ever knowing what is in them. oh its marked security it must be good for me.

its entirely up to you I choose to learn as much as I can and listen to good advice, you do what you like Gandra I'm not stopoping you from throwing your money down the drain.

all I know is my computers all three of them networked together sharing multimedia all around the house have no issues no problems at all my Novatech naked laptop that I loaded windows xp onto myself is nice an stable and works well on wirless without a glitch and has been doing so for four years.

this computer I am on now cost in the region of a grand to build is running perfectly again with no problems and no security updates.

and the third computer a relatively cheaper pc tower that again doesnt need security updates.

I buy cheap old pentium 4 towers locally for £25 each upgrade the memory buy a second hand 15 inch LCD monitor for £29 keyboard £4 and mouse £3 and get disavantaged people online who cant afford expensive computers and except for the cost of the hardware & internet security software I maintain the computers for free. I always advise against security updates and believe it or not none of them have any issues with their computers. yet you download the updates and your in need of a guru to sort out problems with your computer for you. obviously your going to trust a good friend to work on your computers but friendship and business are so incompatable that when things do go wrong friendship can be lost forever.

enough said.
